About Point Grey
Point Grey
Golf & Country Club was built on the Mole Property. Mr. Henry Mole
came out from England in 1862, and upon arrival in B.C. joined the
Cariboo Gold Rush, but returned to the coast in 1863 where he settled
on the land which is the present site of the Point Grey Golf &
Country Club. The old Water Wheel incorporated in the Club crest,
until the late 1940's, stood about a hundred yards from the clubhouse
by Blenheim Street and was actually used my Henry Mole for power to run
the threshing machine.
There were no roads to Vancouver or Point Grey and Kerrisdale in those days was just solid impenetrable forest. The bed of the stream, which worked the water wheel, has been slowed to a trickle – a result of upstream development. The formation of Point Grey Golf & Country Club was the outcome of the efforts of a few residents of Kerrisdale and Point Grey in the summer of 1922. The prime movers in the formation of the Club were Mr. H.R. Budd, Mr. Stanley Peters and Mr. G.D. Ireland. After the purchase of the property had been completed, much help in the building of the course was given by Mr. Robert Bone, who was amateur champion of B.C. on several occasions and Mr. Mike Gardner. The first Professional appointed to the Club was Mr. David Ayton, who was at that time Professional at a Club in the South of England, and he took up his duties in 1923. In 1928 he returned to England, and at that time the Club was fortunate enough to obtain the services of Mr. Duncan Sutherland, who was at Point Grey for twenty years and was mainly responsible for the building of the course. In 1951 he left to assume ownership of the Meadowlands Golf Club in Chilliwack. Mr. Leroy Goldsworthy, Point Grey's third Professional, was well known in the world of sports and had an eminent reputation as an all-round athlete. |
